The Giver

In Jonas’s community, all people are color blinded. The reason why the elders selected this decision is because people could fight over something because of the color. But if they are all color blinded, everything would be same and there would be no fight. And also if there were colors, it would give the people in Jonas’s community an opportunity to make a decision on something. And if they did, they might make the wrong choice, and that would cause a problem. Also, if there were colors, people would have to make lots and lots of clothes, and the community would run out of fabric, etc.

In my opinion, Jonas’s community is the right place to live, because it’s safe, and there are no problems. But, I would still like to live in the world I live in right now, and I would still like to see colors. The reason why I want to see colors are because they are so beautiful and it would be a waste if we couldn’t see it. And it’s so much fun picking out clothes, shoes, etc because there are colors. Without the existence of color, there’s not much to choose from (Because they’re all the same).

1. In your own words, explain what the title of this article means.
It means that the government failed from controlling, as in stopping and organizing from the mess that people are making, using way too much groundwater (aquifer).

2. According to the article, who is taking a lot of water out of the aquifer?
People who lives, works, and goes to High-rise buildings, skyscrapers. (apartment, office buildings, blocks, hotels etc…)

3. If you take a lot of water from the aquifer, what three things happen?
The water table is getting lower and lower each time, the sea water is keep intruding into the aquifers

4. What is the punishment for taking more water than your permit allows?
The punishment for taking more water than your permit is to pay 5 million rupiah or spend six months in jail.

or

5. Do you think this punishment will stop people taking too much water from aquifer? Why?
I don’t think that it is reasonable. I think that because high-rise building people are rich, and 5 million rupiah doesn’t seem like massive amount of money. Owners of high-rise building would easily pay for it.

6. Jakarta’s aquifers are being contaminated by sea water. What else is contaminating Jakarta’s groundwater?
Septic tanks. Septic tanks are intruding groundwater without permission. And it is contaminating the wells and aquifers. It is a very bad situation, not being able to drink for a long time because the septic tanks are close to wells.

7.What evidence is there for the additional contamination in number 6?
The evidence is that there are complaints from Jakarta citizens, that the water are getting contaminated because of high-rise buildings, septic tanks getting mized by aquifers and wells that pollutes clean water.

Myth & Truth of THE WATER

Myth:
Once you use water, it’s gone.
Truth:
I don’t think the water would be gone once you use it. When you use it, it goes through pipes to the factory, get cleaned, and then you can reuse it again.
Myth:
There are more pollutants in drinking water today than before.
Truth:
I think that part of it is true, but also false. The truth is that we do have more pollutants in drinking water today than a long time ago, but we also reuse more water and recycle more to clean drinking water than before. So I guess we make more pollutant water, but also clean it.
Myth:
Bottled water is safer than tap water.
Truth:
I guess some bottled water is safer than tap water. Because the bottled water gets checked in factory, even though that the tap waters get checked often, the pipes could be filled with bacteria growing inside. But some bottled water aren’t safe also, the workers in factories might not have checked the property properly, or there were space for bacteria to be growing in there
